recovery. somebody said obama didn't know anything about the economy. well, forget that for now. the national unemployment rate fell to, count it, 7.8%. 114,000 jobs were added to the payrolls. an additional 86,000 were added to revisions for july and august. the labor force grew, my friends, by 418,000, which means the drop in unemployment is not due to people giving up on looking for work, which is a great republican talking point. president obama broke the news to supporters during a rally in virginia today. >> this morning we found out that the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level since i took office. more americans entered the work force, more people are getting jobs. >> the president made clear the economy is not out of the woods. it's never going to be out of the woods. look where we're going. there are still a lot of people who are waiting for the recovery to reach them. >> we've still got too many friends and neighbors who are looking for work. there are too many middle class families that are still struggling to pay the bills. they were struggling long befo

to work. i do. i have spoken about it all over the country. i will help the american farmer, our economy and get america working. >>reporter: he said that policies the president want to pursue would hurt people this this part of the country. >>shepard: on issues, what are farmers say is at the top of the list? >>reporter: the big one is the estate tax. governor romney says he would repeal the estate tax if he becomes president. president obama would allow it to rise. the other big one is regulation. remember all of the hand wringing over the rumors the epa wanted to regulate farm dust? the labor department is looking at a rule to limit the amount of work that children under the age of 18 can do on farms. governor romney promised in his administration it would be different. >> you have to have regulation. you need regulation for markets to work effectively. i am going to cut back on regulation and put a cap on regulation. any new major regulation will have to be approved by congress. i'm not letting the politician off the hook. >>reporter: governor romney has been telling personal stories

. in a us whohold survey, 873,000 more americans reported having jobs. senator ayotte, isn't the economy getting better? >> i think what is disappointing about the report is that the downtick we saw in unemployment is because of part-time work for economic reasons so people who want full-time jobs taking lower pay. you can't support a family on part-time work. and, of course, we still have the sad fact we have the leaflet labor participation rate since 1981. if the number of people working or participating in the workforce were the same as when the president game into office the unemployment rate would really be 11%. i don't think there is cause to deliberate here. if you told the -- to celebrate here. if you told the american people it would be 7% i don't think anybody would be satisfied or happy with w. that. >> we want to return to full employment but what we have seen now is 31 months in a row consecutive months in a row of private sector job gains. so, it is far better to be gaining jobs than losing 800,000 a month as we were when george bush was in office. we still have a long way

children. what i want to think about is a future that has jobs. >> the ad goes on to say the economy is important to women. >> a victory for the obama campaign on early voting in ohio. a federal appeals court in the buckeye state just reinstated early voting on the three final days before election day. the ruling means that people in the key battle ground state can continue to cast their ballots. depending on the decision of the local border of elections that is. the obama camp filed that lawsuit arguing that everyone should have a chance to vote on those days. >> and the early voting is now under way in florida. absentee ballots are in the mail. yesterday miami-dade county mailed out 170,000 ballots. officials say voting by mail has exploded. in fact more than half of voters cast their ballots by mail or during early voting in the last general election. >>> in today's strategy talk, september jobs report came out just in the nick of time for president obama after this week's tough debate performance. but the honeymoon only lasted five minutes before a tweet by former g.e. ceo jack w

's policies would hurt farmers. the governor talks about his five-point plan to fix the economy, something he says will help everyone from farmers to small businesses. >> i'll make sure our tax policies and our regulatory policies and healthcare, all these things come together to make it easier for small business to grow and thrive. america needs this new direction. we can't go on the path we've been on. we must restore america's strength and i will do it with your help. >> the obama campaign leveling a new attack at governor romney today over his plans to cut spending, specifically cut funding for pbs that would affect big bird. they have a new ad about it on today. >> bernie madoff, gut tons of greed and the evil genius to towered over him. one man has the guts to speak his name. >> big bird, big bird, big bird. >> it's me big bird. >> big yellow, a men as to our economy. mitt romney knows it's not wall street you have to worry about, it's sesame street. >> reporter: the republican national committee coming out with its own response, this graphic advertisement that quotes the count from ses

the number itself. plus, the good news about the last two months. the economy created more jobs than previously estimated. there are people who don't like this number at all. leading the band is the legendary ceo of general electric, jack welsh. here's the tweet you put out this unbelievable jobs numbers. these chicago guys will do anything. can't debate, so change numbers. and i'm just wondering, i understand the way it works the president gets a heads up on the unemployment number 4:00 the day before and has to keep it to himself. you're saying in your tweet this morning that the news went the other way, the people working for the president somehow got the bureau of labor statistics and played with the numbers so it's down below 8 today. how does it work from your perspective? what happened here? >> all i can talk about are some of the numbers. we had 600,000 government jobs added in the last two months. we had 873,000 jobs by a household survey, which is a total estimate, from 50,000 phone calls. of those 600,000 were temporary workers. chris, these numbers are all a series of ass

of the united states has not done enough to protect the u.s. economy from china's alleged currency manipulation and unfair trade practices. at each event today, mitt romney and paul ryan have been trying to thump mr. obama for his absence of leadership on this, they say. here is a sampling from earlier today at mr. romney's convenient in portsmouth, ohio. >> over the past several years, the president failed to call china a currency manipulator. he had the occasion on friday to come out with that official designation. you know what they said? we're not going to make any determination until after the election. let me tell you, on day one of my administration, i will label china a currency manipulator. >> here in ohio, that is a particularly potent attack because the manufacturing base had taken such a hit over the past few years, both in the obama economy and before. paul ryan was campaigning today in youngtown, ohio. he made the point that mr. obama has had a number of chances to take steps to crack down on china and passed on them. watch. >> the administration had their eighth chance to label c

of the night. number one for joe biden, the economy at just over 6:00. number one for ryan, budget and taxes at almost 7:00. ryan, budget and taxes, number two issue, ryan, the economy. mirror image of biden. vice president spent third most time talking about the problems in the arab world for the congressman from wisconsin. number three, entitlements, such as medicare, social security. that's our team of timers actually scored it. unlike the last debate, what was also striking, how similar two candidates were to the time they devoted to key issues, not because they agreed, instead because for every punch, an equally sharp counterpunch. some examples, each different almost completely. but at times, around 5:00 each were nearly identical. same on foreign policy side on iran, again, disagreement, and again about equal time. 4:30 each. likewise on ending the war in afghanistan. the vice president and congressman ryan spoke for nearly the same length of time about 5:00. however, what they said could not be more different. like night and day. correspondents standing by with each side. stay with u

, ohio, on thursday, focusing on the economy and middle class. meanwhile, the second presidential debate is tuesday. president obama begins preparing today in virginia. in his weekly address this morning, the president focuses on jobs and the u.s. auto industry comeback. >> we refused to throw in the towel and do nothing. we refused to let detroit go bankrupt. i bet on american workers, and american ingenuity and three years later that bet is paying off in a big way. >> police in colorado are investigating a shooting at president obama's denver campaign office. and officials say the people were inside when a shot was fired through the office window friday afternoon. fortunately no one was hurt. >>> mitt romney and paul ryan are spending a second straight day in ohio after rallying voters in lancaster friday. >> it's good to be back. and this is our -- this is our comeback team here. and this is our comeback team here in ohio. and we're going to bring back america. >> now, governor romney will be making stops today in portsmouth and lebanon. congressman ryan will visit youngstown. preside

that used to be. bill: republican nominee continues to press on this issue, that's the economy. >> can we afford four more years like the last four years? he wants another stimulus. how did that first one work out? and then, he wants to pick winners and losers among companies, or losers in his case and then, of course he wants to hire more government workers. look, all of these things have not ignited our economy the way it should be ignited. we've seen the slowest recovery from a recession. bill: john roberts traveling with the campaign. live in vanmeter, iowa, that is west of des moines. what is happening there, john? >> reporter: good morning. governor romney will be talking agriculture today. not surprisingly we're on a 700 acre farm owned by the cook family. a lot of soybeans and corn here. we're in madison county. governor romney won this in the caucuses by the way. he will argue the president's policies things like estate taxes, climate change, environmental regulations, energy policy are hurting farmers. he continues to go after the president on issue of jobs of the even though th

they provided points and issues on zingers and economy and debate decorum. >> mr. vice president, i know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground but i think people would be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other. >> with regard to social security, we will not, we will not privatize it. if we listened to governor romney and congressman during the bush years, man where all those seniors would be now if there money had been in the market. their ideas are old and their ideas are bad and they eliminate the guaranty of medicare. >> here he is the problem. they got caught with their hands in the cookie jar turning medicare into a piggybank for obamacare. >> usually when there is a crisis we pull together. we pull together as a nation. as i said, even before we knew what happened to the ambassador the governor was holding a press conference, was holding a press conference. that is not presidential leadership. >> this is becoming more troubling by the day. they first blamed a youtube video. now trying to blame the rome rom ticket for making this an issue. with you shou

. he was quoted as saying that he thought the economy was performing at near full potential. now, first of all, when we decide that 1.5% growth is near full potential, we are in terrible trouble. and i would say geithner suffers from an amazing lack of ambition for this economy. i actually think that's what's wrong with the entire obama administration, they have a lack of ambition for this country and what it can and should do. but i would also say if he believes that, that tim geithner believes that a public sector job is equivalent to a private sector job. it's not that public sector jobs aren't important. teachers are important, firemen are important, nurses are important. but a public sector job doesn't pay for itself. taxpayers pay for it. a public sector job doesn't create other jobs. a private sector job pays for itself and creates other jobs. i frankly found his statement shocking. both because of its lack of ambition and because of its misunderstanding of what actually drives growth. it's not public sector jobs. >> let me ask you this, under reagan's recovery, were we laying of

on that. so whether it's on the economy, whether it's on leadership, he's now tied with the president. as far as leadership ability is concerned. so i think romney got everything out of that debate and more. >> he certainly did. and if you take a look at -- let me put the numbers back on the screen one more time. earlier this month before the debate, romney was behind the president, the president, 51%, romney, 43%. eight-point difference. now 49% for romney, 45% for obama, a four-point spread. that's a 12-point spread in only, what, three weeks, shall we say? and clearly the major development was his strong performs at that debate. >> you know, wolf, it just shows you that voters are still really weighing the pluses and minuses of these two candidates. what i really need to see, though, to make any judgment about how this is going to really affect the election or how it has affected voters is i need to look in the battleground states, don't you think? you need to look at the battleground state of ohio. you need to look at wisconsin. you need to look at iowa. you need to look at virgin

which came out this morning showing the economy adding 114,000 jobs last month, and the jobless rate falling by .3 to 7.8%. that would be the lowest since president obama took office. now, before we get into what jack welch tweeted, here's how president obama reacted to the economic news. >> today's news should give us some encouragement. it shouldn't be an excuse for the other side to try to talk down the economy just to try to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country's come too far to turn back now. >> president obama on the campaign trail today. now here's what mitt romney said. >> the unemployment rate as you know this year has come down very, very slowly but it's come down nonetheless. the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> he went on to say the country can do better, which is about what you would expect him to say, same as you would expect president obama to say what he said. that's the way the two sides do it, year in, year out, campaign after campaign. what no one

problem. here's the secret he's trying to hide. take a look at this. the economy is getting better. the jobless rate in ohio is falling. now down to 7.2%. so mr. economy has become mr. scare tactics. >> we are the most innovative and productive people in the world but we will not allow them to keep taking our jobs on an unfair basis. >> stop taking our jobs. yes. he's vowing to stop what president obama couldn't. it's time to crack down. it's time to get tough. it's time to stop the madness. >> china has cheated. i will stop them from stealing american jobs. we have to crack down on cheaters like china. when someone cheats like china, we have to crack down on it. >> cheating and stealing. okay, america. are you ready for the brick wall of reality romney ran into today? an amazing report reveals romney has invested in the companies that he's promising to crack down on. one of them ships 500 jobs to china. how is that for a crackdown? how is that for getting tough? the outsourcer in chief is still cashing in. the gop has lost control of this jobs debate and this won't help the case.

, this is no laughing matter, we smirk, you decide. if both sides keep kissing off this issue, kiss this economy goodbye. welcome, everyone, i am neil cavuto, downgrade, anyone? stock market crash, anyone? a recession, anyone? don't laugh, to hear even the most optimistic economist tell it, if we don't do something at the end of the year there goes any hope of a sustained recovery. don't just take my word for it but take your boss' word, a third of manufacturers will put off hiring because of it and 83 percent see a stalemate if their business if washington does nothing. now, my guest has a message for washington. get off your ass and do it. it is amazing, jim, they are whistling past the graveyard. they are not even doing that. they are not saying anything about it. >>guest: this is the big of the failure of american politics as the great depression. we are operating without a debt, operating against the debt ceiling ready to hit and now putting in the biggest tax increase in this country's history in a weak economy that is growing at 1.3 percent. people are saying, well, they will get it fixed but it

't get going, the grant could expire before the work is done. >>> and an encouraging sign for the economy, at least in idaho. they say the building slump there may be over. they highlighted major construction projects where hundreds of millions are being spent in the treasure valley. and those are headlines from america's great west. >>> and officials say a drone missile they shot down may have been spying on crucial sites. they released a video of the drone flying over the southern desert. with a good day to you, duncan, israel is saying this drone may have been sent by iran and hezbollah. are you hearing anything like that? >> reporter: hey, alex, good afternoon, well, officially the israeli government has not said who they believe launched the drone, however, they cite media sources which they blame hezbollah and the media backers. officials fear the drone may have been part of an operation to spy on strategic sites in the country. and hezbollah is known to have sent israeli drones in the air space on previous occasions, in 2006, they launched a drone capable of carrying explosives int

, wouldn't it be nice to have a job creator in the white house? the choice is clear. a stagnant economy that promotes more government dependency, or a dynamic growing economy that promotes opportunity and jobs? mitt romney and i will not duck the tough issues. and we will not blame others for the next four years. we will take responsibility and we will not try to replace our founding principles. we will reapply our founding princip principles. the choice is clear. and the choice rests with you. and we ask you for your vote. thank you. >> and thank you, both, again. thank you very much. this concludes the vice presidential debate. please tune in next tuesday for the second presidential debate at hofstra university in new york. i'm martha raddatz of abc news. i do hope all of you go to the polls. have a good evening. >> that was 90 minutes that felt like it was about nine minutes. a fast-moving intensely combative debate for the vice presidential debate this year, focused on complex substantial issues of foreign policy as much as it focused on economic and social issues, obviously they di

the ayatollahs sees. he sees his economy being crippled. the ayatollah sees there are 50% fewer exports of oil. he sees the currency going into the tank. he sees the economy going into a freefall. and he sees the world for the first time totally united in opposition to him getting a nuclear weapon. with regard to netanyahu, he's been my friend for 39 years. the president has met with him a dozen times and spoken to him as much as he's spoken to nibble. i was -- just before he went to th conrence call with the president, with m talking to netanyahu for well over an hour. in stark relief and detail about what was going on. this is a bunch of stuff. look, here's the deal -- >> what does that mean, a bunch of stuff? >> it's simply inaccurate. >> it's irish. >> we irish call it malarkey. last thing, the secretary of defense hamade iear, w didn't walk anything back. we will not allow the iranians to get a nuclear weapon. what netanyahu held up was when they get to the point they can enrich uranium to put into a weapon. they don't have a weapon to put it into. iran is more isolated today than when we

given the economy -- >> that's not even what i'm getting at. >> people feel fundamentally better about the state of the economy. >> did i say i love jack welch? >> forget what jack welch said. i'm talking about people who are trying to say that perhaps people have given up. and if you look into the numbers of the bureau of labor and statistics put out, the number of people who are discouraged and have given up has gone down in the past year by 235,000. and in the past four years, by over 400,000. that number is being skewed out there by those who want to say that the job numbers aren't what they appear to be. long-term unemployment is still very, very high, but those people are still looking. >> the u-6 number for those cognizant. >> coming up -- >> you're right. republicans are in the dumps. you're right. >> no, they're trying to pretend the numbers that they depend on when they're good in their camp. >> you can't have it all. >> are skewed. >> i don't know. if it continues this way, i think republicans can have it all. >> they're not. not going to have it all. >> coming up -- i'm so

of improvement on the economy, closing the gap in most polls. but i want to show you a number. the pew poll shows that 54% of registered voters agree with the phrase doubt that obama knows how to turn the economy around. what do you make of that? >> that's been consistent, and it's been mitt romney's hope. his an state of the economy and whether the president is partially or enough to blame for the bad economy, he's going to lose. that's why you see the president has been launching all the attacks against bain and all the other things he's been doing. so that's been the weakness and the numbers, too, that i'm looking for on the inside the polls are mitt romney's attributes and his ratings among independents because forget whether the polls are skewed for ds or rs, as long as mitt romney keeps winning independents, chances are mitt romney's going to win. in this pew poll, he won independents today, having nothing to do with whether it's skewed one party or the other. that's something to keep your eye on. romney's favorability is moving up, obama's are moving down. mitt romney's winning independen

visions to fix the economy. whiled by continue wants to raise the taxes on the so-called rich. paul ryan called for this plan. >> cut taxes by 20% and preserve important preferences for middle class taxpayers. >> not mathematically possible. >> it is mathematically possible. it's been done before. it is precisely what we are proposing. >> it's never been done before. >> it has been proposed. taxes increase. >> now you are jack kennedy. >> when ryan's proposal end up resonating with independent voters with us is lou dobbs. okay, lou, so biden was trying to make this all out to be a bunch of funny biz with the numbers. like these numbers don't add up and there is no way you can do this. you are not giving us enough in the way of specifics. how did riden rate here. >> score this one for congressman ryan. in point of fact he is right. historically it has been done. the concept of reducing marginal tax rates which is the romney plan has been tested and historically and jack kennedy by the day with play a role. and for the record congressman ryan wasn't asserting he was any jack kennedy. it's

to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> mr. romney, of course, saw it a little differently. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> good try but actually this month, the rate fell because americans were finding work, not because they were dropping out of the labor force. he was right about one thing. >> the american people have a choice. i think in both men we have individuals who cared very deeply about our country and care about the people of america. but we would lead america in very different ways. >> well, that choice was crystal clear on debate night. now, liberal pundits grumbled and groaned over the president' decidedly underwhelming performance behind the podium. let's be honest, i was one of them. i could not believe the president left so many easy opportunities for jabs pass him by. defund big bird? granted the president returned all the jabs the next day. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this

stronger than on the economy and other matters. the other critique is that mitt romney is saying i would do things differently, but there isn't a huge spelling out of how he would do things differently. you mentioned iran. going forward he had a detailed critique of how to handle it forward. that's the trouble trying to define stark lines. that's why he went philosophical to say i would be tougher. we have a duty as america to lead. he mentioned syria. we need to step in and support demonstrators and those things. we'll see. he clearly has an intention, an opening against obama. >> chris, while carrying a bigger stick on foreign policy he's also on the campaign trail being kinder and gentler himself in unveiling what they didn't do at the convention other than through surrogates. he's been giving speeches now three in a row where he gives example of his ministry, his mormon ministry and conduction to suffering people. chris, thank you. >> thank you. >> now i want to move on to a point of personal privilege. some viewers might be confused by the fact that the obama campaign is airing a comme

with a very weak economy and a very high unemployment rate. it is not good news any way you slice it, patti ann. patti ann: stuart, the national average is much, much lower than that. why is california paying so much more? >> it is a very simple answer. this is a self-inflicted wound in california. they have very, very high emissions and environmental standards and they have to have a special blend of gasoline just for california. that means if there is any kind of problem with the refinerries, the 14 refinerries in california that make this special stuff they have got a supply problem and that's what's happened. they are paying roughly 15 cents extra for every single gallon that is consumed in california. that is because of these environmental rules. now that gets even worse in november when california's cap-and-trade rules go into effect. that will mean another hike in the price of gasoline in california. patti ann: wow! big issues there. stu varney, fox business, thank you. >> sure. bill: stinks to be paying that. fox news alert now. a fierce critic of the united states for years will re

me tell you what the ayatollahs sees. the yeet sees his economy being crippled. the ayatollah sees there are 50% fewer exports of oil. he sees the currency going into the tank. he sees the economy going into a freefall. and he sees the world for the first time totally united in opposition to him getting a nuclear weapon. with regard to netanyahu, he's been my friend for 39 years. the president has met with him a dozen times and spoken to him as much as he's spoken to nibble. -- to anybody. i was -- just before he went to the u.n., i was in a conference call with the president, with him to -- talking to be be for well over an hour. in stark relief and detail about what was going on. this is a bunch of stuff. look, here's the deal -- >> what does that mean, a bunch of stuff? >> it's simply inaccurate. >> it's irish. >> we irish call it malarkey. >> thanks for the translation. >> but last thing, the secretary of defense has made it clear, we didn't walk anything back. we will not allow the iranians to get a nuclear weapon. what bebe held up there, when they get to the point where they

's the american people with one message, that he can take us to a better place, he can deliver us from the economy we all inherited from george w. bush to something better. romney came out best in the first debate because he denied the path he has chosen, denied the big tax cut from 35% down to 28% for people at the top bracket. the all-out elimination of the estate tax, the big-time cut in the corporate rate. he do denied his plan to limit nate medicare, denied he would kill coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. he got away without bolterring to deny his plan to let the automobile industry to go bankrupt and to dump 40 million people to wait in the energy ro emergency room. let's look at the some of the latest polling in the wake of wednesday's debate. this afternoon pew released a poll that showed a dramatic shift toward romney. this poll covers the four days sibts the debate and it has romney pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in t

the president for squeezing the economy critically important agriculture industry. >> president has idea he wants to raise the tax rate from 3% to 40%. that won't be good for forms. my own view is i want to take the tax rate down. >> following iowa, romney flew to ohio, critical battleground to his victory strategy, where the voter registration ends today. romney i return at least four times in just the next week. romney aides are touting their ground game and grassroots enthusiasm. in florida, 43.5% of absentee ballot requests came from republicans. 39% for democrats. among those returned so far, 45% are g.o.p. only 38% are democrats. in colorado, republicans requested 656,000 absentee ballots of saturday to 627 for democrats. inness, absentee ballot request favor g.o.p. by 44% to 39%. in north carolina, 52% of all ballot requests of g.o.p. to only dop for democrats and 21 for independents. running mate paul ryan and joe biden off the trail getting ready for the big debate. kid rock leapt "born free" to romney for the rally theme headlined last night in michigan and considering a vice pres

on the economy, they were actually basically siding with romney. they were basically willing to give up on obama, say it's failed, and think that romney's competent. where they were having reservations, and why romney was not having the kind of margins he needed was on social issues, abortion, contraception, planned parenthood, things like this. things that have been emphasized by the obama campaign. that might account for what happened in ohio. if that's the case, that would account for, you know, romney telling the editorial board, basically trying to say, you know, hey, women, if you're willing to vote for me on the economy, you don't have to worry about all this abortion stuff. that is certainly a tactic he's used before. ten years ago, the only general election campaign that mitt romney ever ran, the basic problem was the suburban voters were ready to vote for him. the swing voters in massachusetts were ready to vote for him. they didn't want to have all democratic control in massachusetts. they had reservations about him on abortion, because he had already -- he thought he was running for

news. we all hope the economy starts coming back around, that people get back to work. if you look at second quarter growth numbers this last year, those have been adjusted downward to 1.3%. you still have fuel prices of more than doubled since the president took office, health insurance costs are up 29%, college tuition up 25%. as i said earlier, incomes are down. and so we've got serious economic problems in this country that need to be addressed that aren't being addressed. we need to change the direction of the country. that's what a romney-ryan ticket will do is a different approach, it's not based upon the expansion of government in washington, d.c it's expanding the private economy where good paying jobs are really created, getting americans back to work, getting the economy growing again. and making it a more prosperous future for our children and grandchildren. i think you'll see great contrast and americans will have a very clear choice about two different visions for the future of this country. i believe that will come out very clearly in the debate this evening. >> shep

a new president. the heart wrenching stories have been a departure from romney's focus on the economy. >> my whole passion is about helping the american people who are struggling right now. >> i thought, wow, here's old moderate mitt. where you been, boy? >> reporter: but democrats including bill clinton say romney has been trying to shift back to the center ever since last week's debate. the obama campaign is pointing to what romney said to "the des moines register" on the issue of abortion. >> there's no legislation with regards to abortion that i'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda. >> reporter: contrast that with what he said at a town hall last year. >> what i would like to see happen would be for the supreme court to say, look, we're going to overturn rowe v. wade and return to the states whether they want to have abortion or not. >> severely conservative positions that got him through the gop primary are still there. now he's trying to cover them up. >> reporter: asked about those comments on abortion, a romney campaign spokeswoman released a statement to cnn sa

administration and libya as opposed to focusing in on issue number one, the economy? >> i think they're going to try and do both. i think the reason they're pounding at the libya issue is at they think there's an opening there. they found a chink in the armor. mitt romney right now is kind of tied with the president in the last poll we looked at on the leadership issue. they want to get an advantage. what they're trying to say and what joe biden said yesterday, if he didn't know, he should have known. the buck stops there. this is a question of who's in charge. what we did hear at the state department hearing is that there is an explanation for this from the state department which is they felt they wanted the libyans to take charge of their own security. and of course the president and the vice president are not involved in every security matter when it comes to embassies. but this being a political year, mitt romney is saying you know what, by implication if i were presidt, i would have known about the security problems. or the security problems would have been fixed o

. >> big bird. >> big bird. >> it's me, big bird. >> big, yellow, a menace to our economy. mitt romney knows it's not wall street you have to worry about, it's sesame street. megyn: republicans taking note, a new page at the rnc web site has the count, you know, count dracula? tracking the obama campaign and pointing out that the president has mentioned big bird eight times and elmo five times at recent events. you know how he counts. there has been zero talk of libya plans to fix the economy according to the count. now apparently the folks at sesame street have had about enough of this. can you blame them? >>> well, powerful testimony today before the sentencing of former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky. victims emotionally recounting the horror of his abuse to a judge. sandusky, in the end, was sentenced to 30-60 years in prison for sexually abusing several young boys over more than a decade. keep in mind, he's 68 years old. david lee miller is live in pennsylvania. david? >> reporter: megyn, worth noting here is that there was no visible emotion from jerry sandusk

. >> senator dole, mr. kent would put the american economy in a barrel and send it over the falls. >> i can see my wife. and i think she's thinking i wish you would go out into the private sector. >> i'm going to try to help you do that. >> with all due respect in your plan barack obama's offered a clear plan. >> your plan is a white flag of surrender. >>> happening now, countdown to tonight's vice presidential debate. we're covering it like no other network. first, a cnn exclusive. paul ryan tells us about his preparations to go head-to-head with vice president joe biden. standby. also behind the scenes photos and new details from vice president biden's practice sessions. and new polls from the swing states are coming in. they show why tonight's debate is more crucial than ever for both men at the top of the ticket. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." >>> we're down to only 26 days until the presidential election. and right now joe biden and paul ryan are getting ready for debate night in america. there's intense pressure as the polls show the two tickets are closer than ever. cn

of this campaign which is the economy. >> john, i want to ask you about mitt romney and his foreign policy advisers and how he would differ from president obama. there's an interesting piece "new york times" in the today by david sanger, what he says of mr. romney. beyond his critique of mr. obama as failing to project american strength abroad, mr. romney has yet to fill in many of the details of how he would conduct foreign policy toward the rest of the world. and he also points out that romney has a disparate and politically fractured team of advisers that include warring tribes of neoconservatives and others. is there a coherent strategy that's coming from mitt romney on foreign policy, or is it a work in progress? >> it's absolutely a work in progress. and in part that's because you don't really know what a president's going to do until they're faced with these decisions. as david sanger wrote in his book about what president obama learned in the early parts of this presidency here, there was a covert operation going on with iran he had known nothing about when he was a candidate, that immediat

are these plans going to help me as a person in this economy? and those segments on the economy last night were fabulous. >> let me just say governor granholm focused in on a key word. who do you trust? president of the you stays has doubled down on the vice president who for weeks has methodically misled the american people. >> that's not true. >> it is true. they said flatly this week they never thought it related to the video. they always thought it was terrorism. the state department has said they asked for the security. the ambassador's own diary says he asked for the security. if you want to talk about trust, having the ambassador and three other americans killed while the president lies to you -- >> what intelligence did they get? >> within hours it showed it was a terrorist attack. people in the intelligence community said immediately it was an attack. state department said this week we never thought it was about the video. >> mr. speaker, the head of the national intelligence said their intelligence was not clear in the beginning. they did change their assessmen

that's far, far secondary to the primary issue of this campaign which is the economy. >> john, i want to ask you about mitt romney and his foreign policy advisers and how he would differ from president obama. there's a piece in "new york times" where he says of mr. romney beyond his critique of president obama failing to show strength of u.s. abroad he has a fractured team of advisers that include warring tribes of neo-conservatives and others. is there a could herren strategy coming from mitt romney on foreign policy or is it a work in progress? >> it's absolutely a work in progress and in part that's because you don't really know what a president will do until they are faced with these decisions. president obama arrived to learn there was a covert operation going on with iran he had known nothing about when he was a candidate. that immediatelying changed his position on iran and engagement with iran. governor romney is taking advantage politically but there's no bright lines. >> who are mitt romney's senior foreign policy advisers. we both covered the campaign of george w. bush when

republicans who admire what he did -- >> because he did the economy. >> what he did with the economy. so i think this particular clinton card is being played very judiciously by the campaign. they're going to put him out there even more so. i think it's smart. >> now, if you were romney, would you do the same thing with george w.? would you bring him into the big swing states and have giant rallies with you and george w.? would you do that. i'm just teasing. >> i don't see george bush as an anathema. >> would you bring him out for the big rallies in columbus. >> the president probably doesn't want to participate in this campaign. but there are some spots in town he could probably help. >> how would you like w. out there campaigning for the other guy. >> i strongly recommend to romney that he campaign everywhere with george w. bush. if you look at all the data, people still blame by a margin of two to one the economic problems in this country on bush. so i think -- and the other thing, by the way, it would open up for the president is the very clear case that if you didn't like the bush/che

sure i help the american farmer and i help the economy and get america work again. >> to that end today, mr. romney again said that he would eliminate the estate tax, the so-called death tax and went further as he has on occasion during this campaign to say that he would eliminate capital gains and interest in dividends taxes on the middle class. all in an attempt to spur the economy. shep. >> shep: carl, what's the thinking on governor romney's bounce in the polls since that first big debate? >> they are very pumped here. the romney campaign is quite excited. they say there is more to come. they're building and talking about their ground game, grassroots, 4 million people have been contacted here in ohio alone. 4 1/2 million. that's more than a third of the overall population. the polls have ticked up. romney has closed the gap, leading in some of the national polls, within the mar i didn't know of error, and in most of the battle ground states, he's either closed the gap and in a couple of cases, gone up by a point or two. these are swings in the polls. he's eliminated any bounce the

to is, how are we going to grow an economy in which everybody gets a fair shot? and governor romney's prescription is that if we cut taxes by $5 trillion, skewed towards the wealthy, and we roll back regulations that i've put in place, that somehow, the economy is going to grow. and i fundamentally disagree with that. >> reporter: your supporters have been saying, this wasn't a bad night. he didn't show up. >> it just looked like, to me, he really didn't want to be there. his mind wasn't on it. he didn't want to engage. >> reporter: this is legendary democratic strategist james carville. >> well, as i've said, you know, there's no doubt that i can make a better case. which is why i'm so looking forward to tuesday. >> reporter: but again, why did it happen? al gore said, was it the altitude? >> you know, the -- i'm not going to speculate on that. >> reporter: no lesson learned from it? is that what you're going -- >> well, i do think one lesson learned is just to make sure that people understand how much is at stake and how deeply i care about it. >> reporter: but we asked the presid

about where the economy is right now. >> gretchen: that is former electric ceo jack welch. he started a fire storm questioning the numbers and whether the obama administration manipulated the numbers. jack welch didn't back down. he said for those who like me to pipe down. the 7 numbers are not plausible and that's why i made a stink about it the only thing he would change about the initial tweets. he might have added a question mark. >> i flat out agree with jack walch. those numbers released by the government are unbelievable . they created enormous skepticism they are so convenient. a survey of 60,000 households miraclously finds 183,000 people who returned to work four weeks before the election. that is unbelievable. >> gretchen: jack welch said there was not a surge of un-- employment. >> it betrays a totallyy false picture of america's economy. right now our economy is not doing well. unemployment numbers suggest it has been a surge in our economy that is simply not true. >> gretchen: just so our viewers understand. the objective? >> no, there is a element of subjectivity. >> gr

be pursuing legislation to figure out how to fix this economy, is the first thing he should be doing. >> i do think, though, you either stand for something or you don't. people -- if the president comes out and says i'm for something, you expect him to pursue policies that are consistent with that. i think this is really a case of him having it both ways on the choice issue. >> the point is there's nothing to do with legislation, things like doing international funding for abortions which he says he won't do. >> you agree that it is confusing to people when you say one moment that you're not going to pursue any policies that are restrictive of abortion and on the next day you say i'm pro life, right? it is confusing to people. >> no. by the way, i am very glad he's doing this, as a republican. >> i'm sure you're glad because it's moderate mitt and you're a moderate person. >> we'll leave it here and have you back in the 6:00 hour. you can continue this discussion. thank you very much. >>> john, at the top of the hour we'll talk with bret o'donnell, a veteran president debate coach credited wi

/11. that has been a major item on the american agenda. at the moment, it is still about the economy if you ask voters, their number one concern seems to be the concern of jobs and the jobs must be at the top of the ticket. there has been a change. in the example of that, the romney camp has said it is less about making this about president obama's trip of the economy and much more about looking ahead in saying that mitt romney can do a better job in terms of generating those jobs quickly and getting a trajectory of the recovery to speed up. jon: when mitt romney made his speech at the virginia military institute, he pointed to a lot of the president promises on foreign policy and what he calls failures or mistakes and essentially said that this president has left us less and less safe after four years in office. does that resonate with voters? >> i think that he is wrong that debt and deficit is number one. jobs is numbe it adds a sense of bad news amongst the administration, number two, it does hamper obama's ability to press his advantage on foreign policy, which he did have because of the m
